Hill Country Alpacas Purchases Ranch Property
Medina, Texas, July 14, 2003 - Hill Country Alpacas is pleased to announce that it has purchased a new ranch property in the beautiful Texas hill country, just outside the town of Medina. Located in central Bandera County, the property is a 33.35-acre tract consisting of beautiful mixed hill country terrain. The location is approximately one hour northwest of San Antonio along Highway 16, which has been referred to as “the most scenic in Texas” by Texas Highways Magazine.
“We are thrilled to have been able to purchase this unique property,” said Chuck Thomas, co-founder of Hill Country Alpacas. “It has some fantastic potential. It needs some brush clearing and other improvements, but we look forward to accomplishing those tasks and making a new home for our alpaca herd. It is not often that you can find a medium sized property with both pastureland and rugged, steep terrain. We are blessed to have both on this one ranch.”

Hill Country Alpacas Announces Jewelry Line
Medina, Texas, December 11, 2003 - Hill Country Alpacas is pleased to announce the introduction of a line of alpaca related jewelry items, custom crafted in Sterling Silver and 14k gold. Kerrville based jeweler Jim Morris was commissioned to create these custom pieces. Morris was chief designer for James Avery Craftsman for 10 years before starting his own company to create and produce his own distinctive designs. The new jewelry line will be introduced at the Sun City Sizzle Alpaca Show in El Paso in January, 2004.
“We commissioned Jim Morris to produce charms and other jewelry items that focus on making the animals represented look like conformationally correct alpacas,” said Leigh Thomas, co-founder of Hill Country Alpacas. “There are other jewelry lines in the market that have an artist’s impression of an alpaca. They look like the art that the Inca Indians of South America, the original herdsmen, might have done to represent an alpaca. There some beautiful pieces available, but none seem to focus on representing an alpaca as they really look. That is how we intend to differentiate our line.”

Sun City Sizzle Alpaca Show Results
El Paso, Texas, January 18, 2004 - Hill Country Alpacas announces the results of their participation in the Sun City Sizzle Alpaca Show, a Level III AOBA Certified show. With only one entry in the show, Hill Country Alpacas still came away with a blue ribbon in the Yearling, Female, Grey Color class. Escondido’s Shadow was awarded this recognition by AOBA certified judge Diana Timmerman of Colorado. She commented on Shadow’s wonderful fleece and perfect conformation.
Leigh Thomas, co-founder of Hill Country Alpacas and the exhibitor said, “We are so excited to have won this award. This is our first time to show an animal in competition and to have won a blue ribbon is just wonderful. We have other animals in our herd, but none are eligible to show, based on being too young, and others in the herd are expectant mothers who we were concerned about transporting to the show. We are just thrilled and very encouraged.”
Hill Country Alpacas also debuted their line of alpaca jewelry at the show. “We are happy with the results of our efforts. We received lots of compliments and encouragement on our products and we made a quite a few sales,” reported Chuck Thomas.

Great Western Alpaca Show Results
Denver, Colorado, May 2, 2004 - Hill Country Alpacas announces the results of their entries in the Great Western Alpaca Show held in Denver, Colorado April 30 - May 2, 2004. The Great Western Alpaca Show was a Level V Certified show, making it among the largest in the country. Hill Country Alpacas received 4th place awards for both Escondidos Shadow and Dundee’s Stonewall Jaxon.
Escondidos Shadow, a yearling female in the Dark Fawn class, was recognized by AOBA certified judge Lorraine Guyn as having a lovely conformation and fineness of fleece and remarked that she loved her (typey) head. Dundee’s Stonewall Jaxon, a juvenile male, competed in the Medium Brown class. In her verbal comments during the presentation of awards, AOBA certified judge Jane Tellier said that she was very pleased to see such a sturdy young male with a very nice fleece and looked forward to seeing all of the males in Stonewall’s class as they mature.
“While we would love to have placed higher, we are very pleased with the results from the Great Western Show,” commented Chuck Thomas. “This is by far the largest show we have attended. It is at least twice and perhaps three times larger than the others shows we have competed in. To have placed as high as we did, competing against so many animals, is great.” Leigh Thomas added, “We are looking forward to seeing how Stonewall progresses. He competed against animals that in some cases were almost twice his age. He is still competing with his cria fleece and we are expecting great improvement in his fleece after his first shearing.”

Oklahoma City, OK September 26, 2004 – Hill Country Alpacas announces the results of their entries in the Oklahoma State Fair Alpaca Show held in Oklahoma City, OK September 24-26, 2004. The Oklahoma State Fair was a Level II AOBA Certified show.
Dundee’s Stonewall Jaxon, a Medium Brown male, was awarded a blue ribbon in his yearling class of dark colored males and went on to receive the Color Championship for dark colored huacaya males, the highest honor awarded. In his oral comments, AOBA certified judge Harold Herbold commented that Stonewall’s conformation was outstanding and he was particularly impressed with his overall appearance and fleece condition considering he was among the youngest animals in his class. The judge expects even further positive development in Stonewall as he matures. “We could not be more excited for Stonewall”, commented Leigh Thomas, co-founder of Hill Country Alpacas. “This was only Stonewall’s second show and to receive the Color Championship is just amazing.”

Alpaca Breeders of the Rockies 2004 Fall Festival Results
Castle Rock, CO October 10, 2004– Hill Country Alpacas announces the results of their participation in the Alpaca Breeders of the Rockies Fall Festival Alpaca Show held at the Douglas County Fair Grounds in Castle Rock, Colorado. Fall Festival was a Level II AOBA Certified show.
Hill Country Alpacas had 4 entries in the show and all received awards in their respective classes. The highlight of the show was Dundee’s Stonewall Jaxon, a Medium Brown yearling male, who competed in a composite class. He received both a blue ribbon in his yearling class, and the Color Championship for Dark Huacaya Males. In composite class judging, the animals are evaluated in a combined fleece and conformation class. Stonewall’s fleece, which was shorn in May 2004, was first evaluated in the fleece show by an AOBA certified judge using the “absolute fleece judging system”. Subsequently, Stonewall was evaluated in a show ring by a separate AOBA judge, strictly for conformation, soundness, and balance. AOBA judge Ruth Elvestad from Canada, commented that Stonewall is a very macho male with perfect conformation. “This was the first time that we had ever competed in a composite class” said Leigh Thomas. “My heart was beating so fast when the judge placed Stonewall at the top of the place for conformation, because we then had to wait to see how he did in the fleece show. When the results were announced, I was in shock. This is the most precise judging of an animal’s features. It is very exciting to have performed so well.” The following day, the same process was repeated when Stonewall competed against a juvenile and adult alpaca to receive the Color Championship. “We are delighted with Stonewall’s performance and look forward to his contributions to our breeding program” said Chuck Thomas co-founder of Hill Country Alpacas.
In other results, Abeni-Magnus Crockett received a blue ribbon in the juvenile multi-color male class. Escondidos Kokimo received a third place in the adult white male class. Escondidos Shadow received a fourth place award in the yearling fawn female composite class.

Stonewall went on to receive the Reserve Color Championship for Brown Huacaya Males.
“This was a large show and had some amazingly beautiful animals entered in it,” commented Leigh Thomas, co-founder of Hill Country Alpacas. “It was tremendous to be able to have Stonewall compete against West Coast animals to see how he compares. The Reserve Championship is a real confirmation of the qualities that Stonewall possesses. With this Reserve and the two other Color Championships under his belt, Stonewall is on his way to becoming a key part of our breeding program.”

Hill Country Alpacas had several entries in this year’s show. Dundee’s Stonewall Jaxon, competing in the Yearling Dark Huacaya Male class, received a blue ribbon. Peruvian Heritage Victoria, a six-month old light fawn female, competing in her first show, received a blue ribbon in her juvenile class. Judge Lavan commented that her fleece was outstanding and though she was the youngest in her class, she really stood out.

2005 AOBA National Alpaca Show Results
Sandy, UT June 6, 2005 - Hill Country Alpacas is pleased to announce the results of its participation in the 2005 AOBA National Alpaca show.
Hill Country Alpacas had three entries in this year’s show. Escondido’s Kokimo, competing in the Adult Light Huacaya Male shorn class received a blue ribbon. AOBA certified judge Jane Tellier commented on his very polite disposition and lovely conformation, saying “This is what we are looking for.”
Nine-month-old Peruvian Heritage Victoria competed in the Juvenile Light Huacaya Female composite class. She also received a blue ribbon. In composite classes shorn animals are first judged and placed on the basis of their conformation only. After the class has been placed, scores for their fleeces, which have been judged using an Absolute Fleece Judging System are used to assign final placing in the class. Chuck Thomas, co-founder of Hill Country Alpacas explained, “In the Absolute Judging System fleeces are evaluated not against other animals competing in a given class, but rather, against the judges view of an “ideal” fleece.”
Dundee’s Stonewall Jaxon, also showed in a composite class, against some very tough competition. He received a third place ribbon in the Yearling Dark Huacaya Male composite class. The two animals that placed above him are owned by Magical Farms, one of the largest and best known alpaca farms in the nation. Leigh Thomas, co-founder commented, “We would love to have placed higher with Stonewall, but to be beaten by animals from Magical Farms is nothing to be ashamed of. They are perennial winners and have amazing animals. To have placed just below them is a testament to just how good an animal Stonewall is. Overall, we are very happy with our performance in this show.”

2006 STAR Open Alpaca Fleece Show
Boerne, TX November 12, 2006 - Hill Country Alpacas is pleased to announce the results of its participation in the 2006 STAR Open Alpaca Fleece Show.
This was the first annual fleece show sponsored by the new AOBA affiliate STAR (State of Texas Alpaca Ranchers) held in conjunction with the long running Kid 'n Ewe & Lama Too show which is a well know and attended wool show in South Texas. The alpaca portion of the show was an outstanding success and the organizers look forward to conducting this fleece show in this very important setting for years to come.
Hill Country Alpacas had two entries in the show. Dundee's Stonewall Jaxon continued his winning ways, earning his eighth blue ribbon, even as he has retired from the show circuit to pursue his new career as a herdsire. The strength of this fine male continues to be evident in his fleece, even after he has reached breeding age and has begun servicing females.
Hill Country’s Angelina, a light fawn female whose juvenile fleece was shown earned a second place award. “We are very pleased with both of these results,” said Leigh Thomas, co-founder of Hill Country Alpacas. “Cria fleeces are difficult to prepare based solely on their amniotic tipping and for Angelina’s fleece to have shown so well against other more mature animals speaks worlds about how good her fiber is. As for Stonewall, his show record speaks for itself. He is simply remarkable and we look forward to proving his strength as a herdsire as his first babies are hitting the ground now.”
